Get the policy before you get the machine
Every Australian state and territory runs a healthy food and drink framework for public schools, and independent and Catholic systems usually apply their own version. They are not interchangeable. The site's business manager can tell you which framework applies and which version is current — ask for it in writing before you quote a planogram.
Common threads across the states: sugary soft drinks are out, water is in and should be prominent, and a minimum proportion of items must be classified as the healthiest category. Some jurisdictions restrict machine access during class time rather than banning machines outright.
Universities and TAFEs are a different market
Tertiary campuses in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Newcastle, Wollongong, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Toowoomba and Townsville run closer to public retail: 24-hour library access, late-night study, and students paying by phone. Policy constraints are lighter, volumes are higher, and coffee performs strongly.
For contracts, expect the school or campus to ask about insurance, working-with-children arrangements for servicing staff, and commission. Our commission agreements guide covers what is normal.
Frequently asked questions
- Are vending machines allowed in Australian schools?
- Yes, but the products must comply with the healthy food and drink framework that applies to that school system and state. Sugary soft drinks are excluded under the public-school frameworks.
- What can a school vending machine sell?
- Predominantly water and items in the healthiest classification, with a limited share of mid-range items. The exact proportions are set by the applicable state framework.
- Do universities have the same restrictions as schools?
- No. Tertiary campuses generally operate closer to normal retail rules, which is why coffee and a broader snack range work there.
