Beating the Heat in Regional Sheds and Warehouses: A Hydration Guide for Shift Workers

Why a shed is a different problem to an office
An office is air-conditioned, the work is sedentary and the temperature is roughly constant. A regional warehouse, a logistics depot, a workshop or a packing shed is none of those things. Steel and colorbond hold heat, roller doors dump hot air in, forklift and machinery exhaust adds more, and the work itself generates body heat under high-vis and PPE. Inside a large uninsulated shed in Toowoomba, Mildura, the Hunter or central Queensland, the working temperature can sit well above the outside reading for hours after the peak.
Add shift work and the problem shifts again. A crew starting at 4am finishes in the hottest part of the day. An afternoon shift walks into a building that has been absorbing heat since sunrise. Night crews often have no canteen open at all.
What the rules actually require
Under the model Work Health and Safety laws, a person conducting a business or undertaking must manage risks to health and safety so far as is reasonably practicable, and Safe Work Australia's guidance on working in heat treats access to cool drinking water as a basic control, alongside work scheduling, rest breaks, shade and acclimatisation for new or returning workers. The Codes of Practice on managing the work environment and facilities cover the requirement to provide drinking water and places to take breaks.
Two things follow that matter for site planning:
- Water is the baseline and it must be genuinely accessible. A tap at the far end of a 120-metre shed is technically water and practically a barrier.
- A drink machine supplements water, it does not replace it. Anyone selling you a vending machine as heat-risk compliance is overselling. It is a useful control in combination with water, scheduling and rest.

Water, electrolytes and what to stock
For most work in the heat, cool water is the right primary drink, and plenty of it. Electrolyte drinks earn their place where sweat losses are sustained — long shifts in high heat, heavy manual work, PPE that traps heat — because replacing fluid without any sodium over a long shift is not ideal either. Sports-drink style products vary enormously in sugar; low-sugar and sugar-free electrolyte formats have become the default request on industrial sites for exactly that reason.
A workable industrial range looks like:
- Chilled water and sparkling water — the volume seller, always the largest facing.
- Low-sugar or sugar-free electrolyte drinks — for the hot shifts and the heavy roles.
- Cold brew and canned iced coffee — 4am and night-shift crews buy these steadily.
- Zero-sugar soft drink and iced tea — the taste option, without the sugar load.
- Full-sugar lines in a minority of facings — they still sell; they just should not dominate a shed.
Machine selection for hot, dusty sites
Equipment that is fine in an office fails early in a shed. What actually matters:
- High capacity. A crib room serving 60 people through a shift change empties a small machine in a day. Bigger stacks mean fewer stockouts between service runs, which matters more the further the site is from a depot.
- Refrigeration sized for ambient heat. A deck rated for a 25°C room will struggle in a 38°C shed. Ask the question directly before the machine is placed.
- Airflow and position. Never against a hot western wall, never in direct sun through a roller door, never boxed in by pallets. The condenser needs to breathe or the compressor works itself to death.
- Dust tolerance. Dust is what kills coin mechs and note readers on industrial sites. Cashless-only machines have dramatically fewer faults because there is less to jam.
- Cashless payment. Nobody on a forklift is carrying coins. Card, tap and phone payment is standard.
- Robust build. Reinforced glass or solid-front units survive better in traffic areas near pallet jacks.
Placement that suits shift patterns
The best machine in the wrong place gets used half as much.
- Put it where breaks actually happen — crib room, smoko shed, near the time clock — not in the office wing where the floor staff feel like visitors.
- Keep it accessible on every shift, including night. If the office wing locks at 5pm and the machine is inside it, the night crew has nothing.
- Cover the outdoor edge cases: open-sided depots, wash bays and yards benefit from a shaded, weather-protected position rather than a machine baking in the sun.
- Watch the service run. Regional sites need a stocking schedule that reflects distance — weekly through summer is often necessary where fortnightly is fine in winter.
Building a simple site hydration plan
You do not need a consultant for this. A workable plan for a regional industrial site covers:
- Water points — how many, how far from the work, who checks them.
- A cold drink option onsite and available on every shift.
- Scheduling — heavier tasks earlier, extra breaks flagged above an agreed temperature.
- Acclimatisation — new starters and people back from leave ease in over their first week of hot weather.
- Watching for symptoms — cramps, headache, dizziness, confusion; stop, cool, hydrate, escalate.
- A review after each summer — what ran out, what broke, what people actually drank.
What the machine side costs
On a site with enough people, a drink machine can be placed at no cost: the operator supplies, delivers, stocks and services it and carries the equipment risk, and the site provides space, power and access. Around 20 people onsite is the usual threshold, and shift sites often qualify with fewer because sales spread across 24 hours.
